The podium of the Air Calédonie Foil Challenge

The women podium of the Airwaves Nouméa Dream Cup

The men podium of the Airwaves Nouméa Dream Cup

Day 5

No resting for the competitors who started this 5th day of competition with a foil elimination. Under a blazing sun and a side shore wind , the 80 riders then followed with slalom racing: two for the women, one and a half for the men. There is only one day left to excel: prize-giving will be today at 5pm. On the beach, a crowd was there on the penultimate day of the last leg of the PWA Slalom World Cup.

The windy reputation of Anse-Vata was harmed today in Nouméa with a wind established at 15-20 knots. And it is side/offshore, he race comitte had to set the racecourse quite a distance from the beach, next to "Rocher Cesar".

This morning, in foil, two - "full fleet" races were run. Following his good performances of the day (2 and 3), Nicolas Goyard (FRA485) takes the 2nd place of the provisional classification of the stage. Gonzalo Costa Hoevel (ARG3) retains the lead of the provisional general ranking foil.

For women, the race management sent two eliminations (7 and 8). Delphine Cousin (FRA775) widens the gap with her opponents. Sarah-Quita has been more consistent today  finishing 2nd twice. Everything will be settled today ! These two leaders extended their lead over Marion Mortefon (FRA118) who made the move of day with a 3 and a 4. She made it to the 3rd place in the provisional general.  Lena Erdil (TUR33) who fell today, is tied for points with New Caledonian Lilou Granier (FRA1208), 5th in the provisional ranking of the stage. 3rd place is still challenged.

The elimination of the day (No. 6) among men upset somewhat the established rankings. Pierre Mortefon (F14) is getting dangerously close to the 2nd place (0.6 points difference) with a grat day of racing (3rd).

With only wo days left before the end of the competition, the riders only have one thing in mind :  fight in slalom. Wind decided otherwise today. With a wind oscillating between 7 and 15 knots from the northeast to the east at the end of the day, the race director sent three foil heats for the men.
Gonzalo Costa wins the last two races of the day and thus retains the lead of the provisional rankings in foil. Poland's Maciek Rutkowski (POL23) climbs to 2nd place. Thanks to his 3rd place on the last race of the day, Nicolas Goyard (FR465) climbed to 3rd place in the provisional . His brother Thomas closely follows him, tailed by Antoine Questel (FRA99) and Benjamin Tillier (NC39) who made a poor performance on the last run (8th). The women  did not race in foil on this edition.  eight sailors needed to start a race.

First assessment at two-thirds of the competition

On the women's side, Delphine Cousin is currently leading the provisional classification of the stage. For the French to grab the 1st place in the world rankings, she would have to win the event and Sarah-Quita finish 4th. But nothing is done even though the Caribbean Offringa is well established in her race. There are two days of competition left.

In men, the tension is palpable. For the moment on the stage, it is Albeau who dominates,  fighting it off with Iachino Matteo in 2nd place of the provisional. Pierre Mortefon is in 3rd place and William Ross is 7th. William Ross must get back to 6th place on the stage to overtake Pierre Mortefon in the world rankings.

Gonzalo Costa-Hoevel, leader of the Aircalin Foil Challenge

Anse-Vata wind was capricious today. The weather conditions encountered on the AirCalin Foil Challenge launched this morning, announced the trend of the day. Shifty conditions shuffled the established order in women rankings and re ignited the match for men. The men ran round five and the ladies, round five and six.

The AirCalin Foil Challengestarted at 10:15 for 32 competitors. On this race, which does not count for the PWA slalom world ranking, tactical choices had to be made. The Argentinian Gonzalo Costa Hoevel (ARG3) took the bullet but not without difficulty in front of the New Caledonian Nicolas Goyard (FRA465).

Redistribution of cards in slalom

The race comitee had to deal wuth 15 knots of East wind and gusts up to 29 knots. On three occasions, the riders had to wait until regular winds returned and stabilized.

Elimination 6 in the women reopened the debate: Sarah-Quita made a poor performance by finishing 9th and thus leaving the spotlight on Delphine Cousin, who wins the round. Lena Erdil, on the other hand, hurt herself and had to abandon the race. Lilou Granier benefits from a poor jibe of the Japanese Ayako Suzuki (JP61) and finishes the race in 2nd place. The latter might well run for 3rd place overall provisional if she keeps the momentum . Delphine Cousin thus dethroned Sarah-Quita from her first place in the provisional rankings at this stage.

On the men's side, the fight intensifies. Pierre Mortefon had a great day, finishing 3rd on the day's only elimination. He also climbed on the third step ot the eveny , leaving the English rider William Ross in 7th place. Antoine Albeau does not let go and wins the day's race.

The 80 riders engaged  the 2nd day of the Airwaves Nouméa Dream Cup in nuclear conditions. On this last leg of the PWA windsurf slalom world cup, the scores are tightening, fatigue is being felt. No one can rest though : there are still four days of competition.

Winds of 20-25 knots were blowing on the waters of Anse Vata, getting stronger by the minute, with  the sky clearing out throughout the day.

Given the strong windq no windfoils races were run.

The men ran two and a half eliminations, while the women competed in three eliminations.

In the provisional ranking at this stage, after four heats, Matteo Iachino is in front of Antoine Albeau with a 10 points difference.

Pierre Mortefon, 10 points behind them, completes the podium.

It will be necessary for them to keep the pressure as sebastian Kördel (GER220) and Marco Lang (AUT66) are not far behind

Matteo Iachino, leader after 4 races
